In the Eastside of Dayton, Ohio - not far from where James Hayford lives, you'll find the perplexingly named Watervliet Avenue, and the theme to this new collection of six lush downbeat compositions.
Built from the foundations of James' sample based sound, as known through his Shoes series of edits - James went on to develop these tracks over the last two years with releases on FilteredDeluxe Recordings, this time including more influences of psychedelic musicand shoegaze-like fuzz, as well as some new collaborators.
The EP opens with Papaya Pie and it's humid, reverb drenchedsamples that evoke morning dew dripping off leaves in the rain forest.Featuring Filtered Deluxe lablemate KNOWONE (akaYannis Parzialis, cofounder of Funkin Basstards) on bass, and vocals from longtime collaborator Joe Andrew, singing "Just want water, justwant an ocean ..." A sample taken from the demos of his mythical Spiritualizedcover EP.
Medium Monitor follows next, dragging in samples of everyone's favorite Small Magical Lizard, layering them with children playing at the beach, plodding808's, erie soundscapes, backed by a plethora of layered and chopped up beats& breaks.
Next is the slo-mo downtempo thump of What You've Got (In the End). Driven by 70's psych samples, a futuristic dub bass line, and a vibe that can easily bethe soundtrack to the sunset on the waves, as you drive the city streets atdusk.
Thursday Piano 0429 is the sequel to Saturday 1128 Piano as featured in the 2021 EP Colour of My Dreams.Thursday Piano is part of a series of ambient experiments by James, created from a chopped-up, and distorted solo piano, with captured recordings from a specific day in his life. This time incorporating the sounds of dark and stormy night spent with his family on Lake Erie.
Next up is Aged Like Wine, Aged Like Milk as it opens with guitar feedback and reverbed organ chords, driven by the dusty downtempo beat and tumbling trash can snares, as it reaches its climax of layered wobbly synths.
The EP comes to a close with the cinematic Wide Hive,created with, and featuring up and coming producer Sands on guitar, and additional drums & programming.
